[laughter] >> a day or two before governor romney made his decision about his running mate, i was talking to another pollster. runs the democracy corps. they have been trying to use the ryan plan to beat republican members of congress over the head. like you said, nobody knew who paul ryan was. as we were getting off the phone, i said, i will give you this. i do not think governor romney is going to pick paul ryan. but if he does, we will have another conversation. it strikes me that democrats have not effectively made medicare and the rhine plan -- the ryan plan, i have seen the polling and how it moves people. i have not seen them in flicked a lot of bodily damage on republicans on the ryan plan, on medicare, so far. am i missing something? has it had a meaningful effect or not? >> the quick answer would be, we will find out in 33 days. >> apparently, we are going to find out in 33 days. his path forward is the right one. now romney has struggled to get his message across. there's a new politico poll out that has his personal unfavorability rating at 48% compared to the president's 47%. he has to appeal to all those undecided voters who don't like the president. campaign sources acknowledge that will be a tricky balancing act as he hits the president, he has to be wary of sounding too negative. charlie and norah? >> the president's hope for re-election, he is preparing for the debate in henderson, nevada, outside las vegas. and he made a surprise visit monday to a local campaign office and also called several volunteers on the phone to say thank you for helping his re-election effort. >> everything you do ends up making a huge difference in us being able to win nevada and win the election. so, just keep it up. >> nancy cordes is in henderson, covering the obama campaign. good morning. >> reporter: norah, good morning. while the president does his homework, the obama campaign team is working hard itself to trying to lower expectations for the president's performance.

specifically, how important is the first debate? >> each of these debates is an opportunity for romney to try to shake up the race. if you look at the polling in pretty much every swing state right now, there are a couple of exceptions, missouri being one of them. almost every swing state thement opened up a significant lead outside the margin of error in most cases. if tea lex were to be held today, it would be a shock if mitt romney were to win. he has to find a way to shake up that narrative. >> one of the things we've seen in the polls is older voters moving more in the direction towards president obama, and one of the key issues in this campaign has been medicare which has really been brought to light since mitt romney brought on paul ryan as his running mate. do you think retrospectively that could actually cost him? >> i think this is more about mitt romney than it is about paul ryan. it's always more about the principal than it is about the vice presidential candidate. that being said, when you talk to trks over the last few years, ever since paul ryan unveiled his medicare plan sever

the facade of being a politician. all right. the president really basically just has to maintain his cool demeanor. they're both not going to say anything startling, you heard it all before if you pay attention. but it's the way that romney presents himself. it's like ronald reagan against jimmy carter. reagan was behind in the -- when he started to debate carter but he made carter almost look small. reagan was larger than life, he came across as authoritative yet accessible. if i were romney i'd be watching those reagan tapes. >> the word on the street is he has been doing a ton of preparation but also looking for zingers. things to kind of one-liners to nail the president with. do you think that's a good idea? >> look, i'm doing a debate with john stewart on saturday in washington and i'm sure stewart's going to have zingers all over the place. you come in with zingers you sound stupid. they have to just occur to you. so if stewart says something dumb which is almost a given i'm going to pop him. all right. but i don't know how. and so romney's got to have enough confidence in his intel
